We know this because to interpret it otherwise would suggest that good works play a role in our salvation, which the bible clearly and repeated states is not true. The purpose of his statement is to show that works do not save us, but that grace and faith do! Faith is designed to always spur us on to obedience in christ and to be like he was.
James is giving a valid principle that scripture often teaches, that you can't say you have faith if it doesn't manifest itself in works.
